Decorative Flower Hanging
It is ironic how we are always looking forward to school holidays but after a few weeks, you want them back at school! They get bored quite easily and I find myself always thinking of activities for them to do that does not involve TV or any electronics!
Once during the holidays, my daughter said that she just wanted to stay home. I was really pleased when she suggested that we sew something together. Knowing that she will be making this project with me, I knew that it had to be something simple and quick to make.
We decided on making an easy flower hanging as she wanted something to hang on her room door handle.
The materials we used were whatever we found at home.
Materials
- 2 cotton fabrics
- Polyester batting
- Button
- Fleece to match the fabric
- Embroidery thread
Making The Flower Hanging
Firstly, we drew an outline of a flower on the wrong side of one of the fabrics. We then pinned both fabrics together and cut both the fabrics together following the outline with a pair of sharp scissors.
Repeat the process on one piece of fleece but a much smaller outline of the same shaped flower.
Place the flower fleece on top of one of the (right side) flower shaped fabrics. Sew the button in the centre attaching the flower fabrics together as shown.
Now place both cotton flower shaped fabrics, the wrong side facing each other. Whip stitch the fabrics together with your preferred colour embroidery thread. Stop 3/4 way and fill the flower with the polyester batting as much as you prefer. Use the blunt of the scissors to push the batting to the end of the “flower petals” of the fabric. This will give texture to the flower.
Continue with the whip stitch carefully pushing the batting in at the same time. Stop again just before you complete.
Cut the fleece into a strip at a preferred length at about 1cm width. In this case, ours was about 15cm in length.
Insert both ends of the fleece strip into the gap that has not been sewn yet, which is between the 2 petals. Continue stitching until complete together with the fleece strip as shown.
You have now completed the Decorative Flower Hanging! My daughter and I completed this simple project within an hour!
She was very happy and tried it in various places in her room!
At the end, she still preferred it as decoration for the door handle of her room.
You can, of course, use it for anything and anywhere you like. This project is simple, quick and very gratifying!
We hope you enjoy making it as much as we did!
