Sew the Kekek to the Baju
Kekek is the triangular piece under the arm of the traditional Malaysian baju kurung or baju melayu. It’s main purpose is to give the extra space under the arm for ease of movement and comfort.
Originally, the traditional baju kurung and baju Melayu had both the kekek and pesak attached to the sleeves and body of the baju, but over the years the designs evolved. Now you see the baju with the pesak but not kekek, with the kekek but without the pesak and some with the appearance of the baju but without either the kekek or pesak.
Nowadays you often see children’s baju without the pesak. For this How-to video, I will show you how to attach the kekek to the baju without the pesak. The steps are somewhat the same with or without the pesak .
The photo above is a baju kurung with both the kekek and pesak.
Above is a photo of a toddler’s baju kurung top with just the kekek.
Happy sewing!
